Bobby & Kate made DVD swing dance history when they put out their first two DVDs, which focused on Balboa Follower’s Technique and Aestethics. In 2016, they released a new set of DVDs for Beginner Pure Bal, Bal-Swing, and inter/adv Footwork.
Pure Balboa for Beginners
In 1930s California two swing dances dominated the dance floors–a subtle chest-to-chest dance called “Balboa,” and a wilder, energetic open-position dance called “Swing.” Some original dancers combined the two into what we call “Bal-Swing,” which is danced across our modern world by a passionate community. In this DVD, Bobby & Kate cover the fundamental principles and steps of that chest-to-chest dance “Balboa” (which we call “Pure Bal” today). They discuss both single time and double time basics, important concepts such as shuffling, and most of the basic vocabulary of original Balboa, including side scoots and crab walks.
Bal-Swing for Beginners

In this DVD, Bobby & Kate cover the fundamental principles and steps of “Bal-Swing.” They discuss important concepts such as stretch & compression, the out & in motion, and most of the basic vocabulary of original Bal-Swing, including toss-outs and lolly kicks.
Footwork — for int/adv Bal Dancers
Footwork is one of the most important ways dancers express themselves in Balboa and Bal-Swing. It’s also a great way to show off the partnership moving together. In this DVD, Bobby & Kate focus on a variety of footwork stylings and options for leaders, followers, and the partership as one. This DVD includes variations for Balboa basics, lollies, toss-outs, out & ins, and swivels. Moves include intricate rhythms smooth slides, and powerful lines. (For intermediate and advanced dancers.)
Technique for Balboa Followers
Learn the fundamentals of Balboa and Bal-Swing from the viewpoint of a follower — the one who doesn’t know which move is coming next, and must live and react in the moment. Rather than looking at following as a series of patterns, Kate and Bobby give followers all the tools needed to follow the major Balboa movements, and thus almost anything a leader can throw at a follower. Topics covered include posture, rhythm, stretch, compression, out-and-in movement, and turning.
Aesthetics for Balboa Followers
This DVD for followers is all about getting a great look and style in Balboa and Bal-Swing. But it’s much more than just a collection of followers’ variations — it’s a DVD about showing followers how to build and invent their own styles and empower their own voices. It explains how a follower like Kate has created hers based on the mechanics and spirit of Balboa and Bal-swing. It doesn’t just explain what a follower can do, but why, when, and how a follower can do it. The DVD also covers beginner advanced styling ideas and AESTHETICS for Balboa Followers to variations.
